Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located close to the charging place. The path to the station must not be blocked and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not allow objects such as lighters or matches to be utilized while someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
