Propane cylinders are designed to take up very little space and can be kept in an outdoor facility or inside the storage area. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, although, it still does requires operator training in order to be conducted safely and also need knowledge of safety standards such as the OSHA or Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
Compared to the electric forklift, IC lift trucks are easier and faster to refuel. Then again, the internal combustion engine does create polluting emissions and are extremely noisy.
NARROW-AISLE LIFT TRUCKS
The ITA's Class 2 trucks include a huge array of electric lift trucks and these are specifically made to be utilized in narrow aisles. The typical storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily allows a counterbalanced lift truck to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Normally, narrow aisles are 8 feet wide, while the very narrow aisles are roughly 5.5 to 6 feet wide. These narrow aisles require specialized lift trucks that could put away loads without any turning at all or that are small enough to turn on a tight radius.
The three most common narrow aisle forklifts are the turret trucks, order pickers and reach trucks. The differences between these forklifts are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Lift Trucks
The original narrow-aisle forklift is considered to be the conventional reach truck. These machines do not need a large counterweight and are therefore, small enough to turn in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms which extend in front of the lift trucks. Nevertheless, depending on the storage configuration, these outrigger arms can prevent the trucks from getting near enough to the storage rack to deposit and retrieve loads. In order to overcome this situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is actually a reach truck that is designed with a telescoping device. This allows forks to easily and concisely reach into storage areas.
The ideal environment for a narrow-aisle forklift is a place that is clean, has good lighting, and has well-maintained floors, good traffic flow, as well as an ample turning aisle.
