History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in the year 1919. The company was initially established by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The company's original name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
During 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling machinery. During 1986, the company obtained the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years.
