It is much more complex to drive a forklift than to drive a car. The lift truck driver has to receive special training and have the necessary skills to use a lift truck. A high level of concentration is required to operate a lift truck. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also referred to as OSHA reports that 85 individuals die in mishaps related to forklifts every year year. About 35,000 people are injured each and every year in lift truck mishaps. Nearly 50% of operator deaths are caused by a lift truck tip over.
In order to prevent tip overs, it is vital that drivers know how to correctly assess load weight. In the construction business, the load weight is usually posted right on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole weight of the load would be roughly 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the driver must take more weight into account.
It could be dangerous if the driver makes poorly informed estimates as the loads actual weight and whether the machine can handle the load. If a driver cannot be certain regarding the load weight, he must request assistance from the supervisor.
Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up near enough to a building to lift or place a load using an extended boom. It is important to use the load chart to avoid tipping the forklift. Even if a lift truck does not really tip over, a mishap has occurred when the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Though damage may not be obvious, the rear axle can have been broken upon hitting the ground.
It is even possible for lift trucks to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded forklifts could tip just after a driver has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and turns abruptly while bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity will be pushed to the edges and can result in a tip over. A driver must always utilize the joysticks to be able to retract and lower the fork.
